Twenty years and going strong, the quilt project at Claire Lilienthal School continues to introduce children to art, brings our community together to create beautiful quilts, and generates income for our PTA to supplement the education of our students.
 
Each of our almost 700 students in grades kindergarten through 8th grade create a quilt square for their class quilt.  We work with the teachers to develop themes based on their curriculum, with parents to design the quilts based on the class’s themes, with the students to help them create images on fabric for their theme.

Art mediums we regularly use include fabric makers, fabric paints, fabric collage, fabric mosaic, water based resist, discharge mediums, fabric marbling, flower pounding, wool roving, and more.

Parent volunteers are a key component to creating these 20 plus quilts each year.  They graciously give their time in the classroom, helping with the artwork, helping to design and sew the quilts tops, then coming together on four weekends to assemble, tie-off, and sew the binding on each quilt.  The quilts then hang in our school hallways, bringing smiles to the faces of everyone who passes and creating a wonderful feeling of community in our school.
 
At our spring auction, quilts find their new homes, bringing in needed dollars for our children’s education.  Since 1993 our 282  quilts have raised over $333,000 which helps fund our library, arts programs, outdoor education, classroom supplies, K-5 physical education and more.  We also create note cards, t-shirts and canvas bags using the quilt images so we all can continue to enjoy them.
 
It has been a privilege to work with all of the teachers, students, and parents each year as we create these beautiful quilts for everyone to enjoy.
